An inspirational workshop for teachers
The BLAKE Inspire for Teachers programme introduced an art activity that builds on environmental themes from across the week-long session.
When talking about science or the environment, we need to be creative and find new ways to engage and connect with people. Art is an effective medium and creative way to connect with the local environment, and natural world.
Drawing inspiration from the MM2 activity on the rocky shore, the teachers used air dry clay to create their own rocky shore organisms. Rocky shores have fantastic colours and creatures, so there is plenty of creativity designing the organisms. Particular attention is given to the adaptations the creature needs to survive in the rocky shore.
“One of my highlights was the clay modelling session of the metre-squared activity and I couldn’t wait to share it with my son, the staff at school and students. As I sat calmly with my students, I figured that art has a way of communicating complex messages as we connected emotionally and intellectually modifying our art piece based on the shared learning and feedback,” says Vanessa, teacher from Arahoe School.
